I teach at an inner city school in Indianapolis. My class is comprised of twenty-two eager first graders. I am teaching students with special needs, high poverty levels and second language learners.
I am amazed when I ask my class what books they have read or heard. They have never been taken to the public library. They have not been brought up in a literature rich environment. I have many books in the room, but if my students can not see an interesting picture on the cover, they do not pick the book up to read.
I would like to have a book center, where the books face out, so my students can see the picture on the cover and get excited about reading the book. I read to my students every day then put the book out for them to reread, they quickly find the book I have read, but I want them to find others
When you go shopping, don't you look at the pretty displays? Please help me make a display that will draw my students into reading.
