Science Show and Tell

My students need art materials, such as beads and dough, to generate conversation about science concepts in their own ideas and language.

My Students

Art materials will help my kids show what they know about science.

My students are English language learners, so text can be intimidating and perplexing when used as a way to introduce a science concept.

Art materials allow kids to explore concepts by modeling, building, and creating props to tell stories. Students feel supported when they are taught this way, so they freely communicate their ideas in English and Spanish. It is an effective way to jump start a unit.

My Project

I am requesting pony beads, pipe cleaners, and presto dot clay products. Students will create chromosomes with genes by stringing pony beads onto pipe cleaners in specific patterns. Using presto dot clay, they will build animals using "circular" building blocks to show that animals are made of round cells. They can use their models of chromosomes and animals to tell the "stories" of heredity and cell theory to their neighbors. This really draws out what students know, gives me a chance to refine their ideas, and gives students a chance to learn socially.

Students who feel intimidated by scientific vocabulary overcome their anxiety because of the supplies you are helping my class buy.

Your gift makes my kids happier and smarter. Thank you!
