Do you remember the trouble of trying to read a science textbook and understand the concepts? I certainly do! Instead of just reading and answering questions, my students CREATE Interactive Science Notebooks as they learn and engage themselves in the science content throughout the whole year!
My 8th grade students are of high poverty and high need.
They are also of high spirit and high energy. They attend a school that has been taken over by the state of Mississippi under conservatorship. Their school is failing, and yet it still does not have money to provide the basic resources for them. Despite the barriers in their lives, my kids have an infectious drive to learn given proper motivation and structure in the classroom. Walking through the halls of our school, it is common to see a roomful of students hunched over papers writing furiously or a roomful of students with all hands raised waiting to answer a question. For the teacher, tapping into the students' excitement does not come easy, however. It takes careful and insightful planning each and every day. If our kids get off-track one reason is because they've been given busy work or are being lectured to all day. They need structured activities and ownership in being organized and engaged in their education.
With your generous donation, my students will be turning boring composition notebooks into INTERACTIVE SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS! These notebooks are NOT just a place to take notes! Yes, they will take notes in them but they also will use them to PROCESS their new learning! The notebooks are designed like our brain functions. On the right side of the notebook will be the facts and information that the teacher will input to the students. The left side will be their creative side, where they will create pictures and diagrams, graphic organizers, write summaries, create poems, collect and chart data, and many more creative activities that enable students to better remember their learning. Beyond promoting engagement, the Interactive Science Notebooks will help my students stay organized and increase their reading and writing skills. At the end of the year my students will put their beautiful notebooks to even more use by using them to study for their big 8th grade science state test, the MST2.
Your donation will make Interactive Science Notebooks a reality in my students' lives!
