Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
So much of what makes science come to life is just beyond the limits of human perception. Microscopes open doors to exciting worlds for our students to explore.
Our school is the diverse one in town.
An old school with an impressive history, we sit in the heart of our community. A large majority of our students are ethnic minorities, and well over half are on free or reduced lunch. Within my own classes, the students tend towards the lower performing but have tremendous potential nonetheless. I believe that this makes my job all the more important. I can open their eyes to possible careers and exploration in ways that their families can't or won't. It is a tremendous responsibility that I am glad to have.
My Project
My request is actually an area of tremendous need that a lot of other high schools don't face, a lack of microscopes. Microscopy is basic to biology, and most science departments focus major resources in that direction. Our school being well over 100 years old has done this in the past, but the microscopes we currently have are simply inadequate for the needs of high school students.
This project request is what I hope will be the beginning of a process where my department is able to modernize our technology. Twenty microscopes make an ideal class set, these three added to other quality scopes that we already possess will put us closer to the goal of a dependable class set.
Microscopes get a lot of use in my classroom.
My students get to see their own cheek cells and compare them to plant cells that they prepare themselves. The get to explore the microscopic ecology of our local ponds. They are able to witness the photosynthetic load of seemingly clear water and the action of protozoa. We can use nail polish and tape to observe the stomatal openings on leaves that make our planet breathe. Amazing things are possible with dependable microscopes.
