Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach approximately 80 students in a diverse neighborhood in Meriden, Connecticut. Our neighborhood is low income, but full of hardworking families who want their children succeed. All of them are receiving free breakfast and lunch. My bilingual classroom is one of two high school bilingual classrooms in our district. My students are capable young men and women that need some diversity in classroom instruction. They are hard workers and deserve more differentiated activities and opportunities in my Integrated Physical Science and Biology classrooms.
Modeling encourages ELL students to actively process concepts, to unpack and reveal their thinking, and to consider how the available evidence fits or not with their ideas.
We are entering a new era of science instruction through the Next Generation Science Standards. These ambitious standards ask our students to design, build and use models for a variety of physical, earth and life science standards.
This project is to obtain models of the solar system and DNA molecule. Incorporating the models into science allows my students to make more meaningful connections with their learning, and we have fun learning very difficult content!
My Project
My students are eager to learn new things and expand their understanding of the world around them. They learn best when given materials to manipulate and build models. The models allow for the students to interactive with the content and then write about what they see, while providing opportunities to modify and expand their understanding as new information becomes available.
The Giant magnetic Solar System, the Cross-section Earth Model, Building the structure of DNA, and Model Kit Student DNA will allow my students to create models of the solar system, the cross-section Earth, and the molecule of DNA to share their understanding of those areas with each other.
Students will not only create the models, they will also write about their creation and explain why it is important.
These materials will help them make sense of science, build their confidence in science, and visually display their learning.
