Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 170 students Biology and Geology. CHS is considered a Title 1 School. This means that our student population has a large number of low income students. Because of our student demographic, the school receives federal funding to provide for some of their basic educational needs (i.e teachers are provided with copy paper). A majority of my students are students with special needs integrated into a general education class. I also teach a number of students who are English learners.
Students of different backgrounds and knowledge levels learn to engage with the world and see the relevance of science in my class.
My students develop critical thinking skills through the use of hands on lab instruction. We focus on working together in teams to collaborate and discuss science in the real world. Our classes are unique in that they have integration of students with very different backgrounds, and abilities. This makes for a rich classroom culture of diversity and understanding.
My Project
Headphones will provide an opportunity for my students to utilize their Chromebooks in a variety of activities. Some of these activities include using Nearpod virtual lessons to teach students about topics such as biodiversity and human impact. Other situations that headphones would be necessary include the creating and viewing of Flipgrids that students create to record videos of themselves discussing a topic.
Headphones for each student will help my students engage in curriculum that is on a virtual platform.
Often time Youtube videos are used to assist me in explaining a topic in science. Allowing students to have their own set of headphones will give them independence in exploring resources online related to topics.
