The way I am choosing to incorporate the books received is by encouraging the kids to read during their downtime between assignments, which is especially important to fill now since our school has a ban on cell phones in class. On other days, we give the allotted time of silent sustained reading which is just enough to get them interested in their style of book. This allows them to have their pick ready for the next time they get a chance to read. One specific moment, I recall was when a student was very begrudgingly choosing a book from a shelf of old, worn books that we have. The student was complaining out loud and he said, \"Mister, why don't we have any fun books to read? Like fun ones with cool pictures?\". The rest of the class erupted telling him that he should go look at the new comic books present in the back in the box they arrived in and he quickly retracted his statement and continued on with one of the comic books we received. We didn't hear his \"complaints\" any more after this day so that was a surprise.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw these materials, they were mostly confused. It was mostly because these books aren't really present in our high school setting. I remember one of the girls in our class saying, \"Hey, my younger sibling has that book in his school too!\" Other kids were asking her about the book and her thoughts on it, since our multilingual students didn't read much in their home countries. The student in question talked about the Diary of a Wimpy kid books and how they're \"dumb, but they're fun.\" Then she explained about how sometimes the kids in the book have a \"cheese touch and stuff\" and the kids wanted to know more about the series as a whole. They were especially excited about the comic books as they have never read one, but it was fun for all of the kids that wanted to read those as we had a small group that was learning how to read the panels in the correct order.\r\n\r\nSo far, I am thinking that once the students have read the amount equivalent to one book that they will have a project where they will \"advertise\" their book of choice. They will have to give a review that will be roughly a paragraph long and give a ranking of 1-5 stars. They will have to include their favorite section of the book in the form of a quote, and will make this poster well-decorated and colorful. But until they get there, I will build up to it with reading logs once they're \"hooked\" on their book of choice.","fullyFundedDate":1750166261050,"projectUrl":"project/encouraging-quick-reads-keeping-kids-h/9119610/","projectTitle":"Encouraging Quick Reads - Keeping Kids Hooked on Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Aguayo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9926637"},{"teacherId":9820744,"projectId":9336841,"letterContent":"Thanks to your donation of swim goggles, our newest athletes could participate confidently from day one. We set up a simple check-out system (sizes S/M/L, labeled bags) and a quick \"fit-and-fog\" station so each swimmer learned how to adjust straps, rinse lenses, and care for their pair. With clear vision and no eye sting from chlorine, beginners were willing to put their faces in the water, streamline off the wall, and try underwater kick work—skills that are hard to teach without goggles.\r\n\r\nA favorite moment came during our first fundamentals clinic: a nervous freshman slipped on a pair, dipped under, and came up smiling—\"I can see!\"—then completed five clean streamline glides in a row. That single success sparked the lane to cheer and try again.\r\n\r\nNext steps: we'll use the goggles for starts/turns practice, underwater body-line drills, and short video feedback so swimmers can see their head and eye position. That combination allowed us to run structured beginner lanes alongside advanced reps so every student found a place to belong and improve.\r\n\r\nHere's one moment we keep talking about: on our first gear day, athletes gathered around a neat stack of loaner suits, goggles, and new training equipment. A freshman who'd been watching from the bleachers asked, \"Coach, does this mean I can actually get in today?\" She suited up, learned how to streamline and kick, and finished a simple ladder set she didn't think was possible an hour earlier. Teammates high-fived her at the wall. Those smiles—and the confidence behind them—are what you funded.\r\n\r\nStudents' reactions have been immediate: more consistent attendance, quicker transitions into the water, and lots of \"Coach, what was my split?\" They love writing goals on the board and seeing them checked off—first 50 free without stopping, first legal breaststroke kick, first clean catch-and-shoot. With basic gear in place, our practices are safer, smoother, and far more inclusive.\r\n\r\nThank you for making it possible for every Tiger to train with dignity, structure, and joy.
