Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We need experiments! Our classroom lacks most of the essential supplies and chemicals needed for students to explore science through experimentation. Help to inspire our students to work hard in science with the materials that give them a hands-on lab experience.
My students attend an urban Oklahoma middle school that is 100% free and reduced lunch.
Our building is currently under renovation and students are often discouraged by the lack of supplies, facilities, and sometimes even desks, at our aging school. Despite these challenges, I know that my students enjoy working with their hands; our shop class and engineering club are our most popular electives.
My students are very passionate, but not always curious. Developing curiosity is one of my main goals for them this year. Many are English Language Learners and struggle with the text book, film, or lecture presentations. Tactile learning is essential for improving their understanding and will help foster their curiosity.
My Project
The resources I have requested will provide the chemicals for numerous labs, including physical and chemical changes, numerous reactions (including elephant toothpaste, color of fire salts, and simulated grain silo explosions), states of matter, acids/bases/pH, cell exploration, and the composition of shampoo.
The request also includes a few supplies that we are missing: microscope slides - viewing cells and bacteria; We have a few working microscopes, but are out of the slides! Tank- Growth experiments and a safe place for more dangerous reactions. Graduated cylinders for measurement, lab safety equipment, to keep them safe!
In high school, my students will only be required to take one science class.
To make a lasting impact on their attitude toward science, ultimately opening the doors to college and beyond, my students need to develop their interest in science NOW, in middle school. It is here that science can be more approachable, and, with the right supplies, can allow them to explore how amazing science can be. This is our last chance to spark their curiosity!
