Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth-grade students are eager to learn! They are enrolled in a dual-immersion program in Hawthorne, California. They started the program in Kindergarten and are starting their sixth year in the program. They are fluent in English and Spanish.

Our elementary school is a title 1 school.

Most students receive a free or reduced price lunch, based on their socioeconomic status. Regardless of their socioeconomic status, my students are creative, intelligent and are improving every day. They need to be challenged and taken out of their comfort zone. Many students are really shy, but I believe that learning about science, writing about and presenting their findings will provide encouragement and raise their self-esteem.

My Project

I teach at a Title 1 elementary school. Unfortunately, my students do not even have the basic supplies and resources they need to perform simple science experiments in the classroom. I have purchased supplies for them myself, but we are still in need of many items. For example, our classroom would greatly benefit from a microscope and slides. Some of my students have said that they have never looked through a microscope. They are an eager bunch and I know that they will truly enjoy learning about science through the use of microscope.

I love seeing my students’ expressions when they have understood a concept in science.

Their faces light up and they are enthusiastic to share their findings. We need supplies (such as colored cardstock paper, markers, colored pencils, scissors, ink for our printer, etc.) so that students are able to display the results of their experiments. I want to create a lifelong love of learning about science, and hopefully even encourage students to pursue a field in science as their profession.
