Science is Beautiful! Hands-on Solar System Models and Lunar Cycles
Help me give my students an engaging, hands-on solar system models! In 8th grade we cover the Sun-Earth-Moon system, focusing on lunar phases and seasons, and how the solar system relates to the force of gravity.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I school, my students come from a wide variety of underpriveledged backgrounds, and a multitude of family and home situations. In general, my students are hard-working, hands-on learners who often struggle with language; my students appreciate the visual and textile experiences of science, and I love exposing them to tangible, visual, and experimental nature of science content.
My students are generally mature enough to appreciate the depth and application of science content, but young enough to still get wide-eyed at the Magic behind Scientific explanations of the world around them.
My Project
All kids, especially ELLs and Special Education students, learn best by manipulatives and visuals. Lunar Cycles, Solar System relationships, and seasons are complicated ideas, which are difficult to teach without effective models.
These materials will provide kinesthetic tools and hands-on models for students to experience engaging lessons for Earth and Space Science lessons.
The solar system models show students the relationships of gravity keeping the Earth in orbit around the sun, and the moon in orbit around the Earth, as well as how the orbital paths cause seasons and moon cycles. The lunar cycle tattoos will provide a highly engaging activity to predict the moon phases accurately by students getting to become part of the model, with their main body as the sun, their upper arm as the Earth, and the tattoo band as the lunar orbit around the Earth.
