"We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better." J.K. Rowling
We are a Title I school located in an urban environment, and my students, grades six through eight, are a very diverse group facing a wide range of challenges.
My students share in common, though, a desire to succeed and excel.
As the School Library Media Coordinator, my goal is to engage my students with exciting media to both support their learning and offer them the opportunity to develop personal, meaningful connections to the world around them.
My Project
We've had the good fortune to have two of these Science Comics titles in the past, on Dogs and Dinosaurs, and both copies were loved to bits. I'm asking for your help in providing not only replacements for Dogs and Dinosaurs but also more of these wonderful Science Comics titles, ranging from Bats to Plagues to our Solar System. I also ask for the copies of the popular series Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur and a model dinosaur to grab our students' interest!
These books will entice our reluctant readers to experience the joy of leisure reading, while at the same time increasing their awareness of a wide variety of science topics in a fun and engaging way.
Graphic books can also aid our English Language Learners as a stepping stone between their native language and their growing English literacy skills.
Even when students are excited to learn more about science, some struggle with vocabulary and comprehension. Graphic novels bridge that gap with visual storytelling, making our students stronger, happier readers engaged in science learning.
Please consider donating to this project and being a hero to our students!
