My Project

This DonorsChoose project is designed to bring vibrant, hands-on learning to a 6th-grade science classroom by helping students explore real-world scientific phenomena. Through an engaging mix of materials, students will dive into chemistry by observing chemical reactions and gas production firsthand using everyday items like baking soda, effervescent Alka-Seltzer tablets, and fizzy bath bombs. Physics and energy concepts will come to life using an electric kettle to demonstrate thermal energy alongside classic Slinky springs to visually model wave behavior. To foster engineering design and structural modeling, the project integrates tactile materials like Play-Doh, pipe cleaners, foil sheets, and mini animal building blocks, allowing students to construct physical representations of abstract concepts.

Using interactive components like the Operation board game to spark discussions on anatomy and circuitry, this initiative turns standard textbook lessons into memorable, hands-on classroom discoveries.

Classroom Material Connections: To give you a quick glance at how these specific cart items map out to a standard 6th-grade science curriculum, here is a breakdown of the supplies: Chemical Reactions & Matter: Students will use baking soda, Alka-Seltzer tablets, and bath bombs to experiment with solubility, effervescence, and kinetic changes. Thermal Energy & Waves: An electric kettle will help demonstrate phase changes and heat transfer, while a set of four Slinky springs will serve as the perfect tool for modeling longitudinal and transverse waves. 3D Modeling & STEM Design: Play-Doh, aluminum foil sheets, mini fuse beads, and pipe cleaners will allow students to build physical models of cells, molecules, or ecosystems. Anatomy & Circuitry: The classic Operation electronic board game will be utilized to introduce human body systems and simple electrical circuits in a collaborative, playful format. Creative Rewards: The project also incorporates scratch-art bookmarks and animal building blocks to keep engagement high and celebrate student milestone achievements throughout the unit.
