Science Equipment for a Better Understanding of Our World
My students need 12 microscopes in order to explore science in a hands-on manner, one digital microscope for classroom use, and one set each of plant and animal slides.
Malcolm Forbes wrote: "The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one." Currently my students must schedule lab time in the high school science room. As a result, we are limited to when we can use it and what we can do. This is not conducive to hands on learning.
We are a small rural central Texas community.
As such, our school does not have a lot of revenue. Most of my students live on either a ranch or a farm, are poor to middle class, and many come from broken households are live with grandparents. However, they are an excellent group of students, are well behaved, study hard, and have a thirst for knowledge. They recently competed in district UIL and made our school proud by bring home several first place medals, many second and third place medals, and the overall first place district trophy! Several teachers and the school board have complimented them on their manners and abilities.
As a first year teacher, this class has been a blessing! They have been patient with me, have followed the rules, and have been a real joy to teach. Although small and poor, the district's goal is to provide the students with quality education and strong moral support. I can't imagine teaching anywhere else!
My Project
Microscopes will enable the students to readily access scientific information when needed and not have to wait on a scheduled lab time 4, 5, or more days later. The digital one will allow the teacher to demonstrate and point out the various parts of cells for the broader understanding of what they are to look for in their student scopes. This hands on experience will be invaluable as they continue their scientific research and learning.
By providing the students will hand on experience in the class room setting, they will be able to more readily access information and receive a more well rounded learning experience.
Transition time from the class room to the high school science lab will be eliminated enabling students to have more time to explore the world of science.
