Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach and work with 45 fifth grade students in Math and Science. Our school is a Title I school. 99% of our school's population is at-risk, and is on free or reduced lunch.
With the nurture and encouragement by our teachers and staff, many of our students are able to overcome their low-socioeconomic status and go on to pursue successful careers.
Our students are risk-takers, rise to challenges they are presented with, easily motivated, eager to learn, and energetic.
My Project
Hand generators will allow students to experience the transfer of energy firsthand. They will be able to see how mechanical energy (turning the crank) is transferred to electrical energy, then to light energy. The tuning forks will help students understand that sound is produced through vibrations. The UV beads and prisms will help students understand light energy, white light, the electromagnetic spectrum, and reflection/refraction. The magnets and friction boards will help in reviewing forces.
This project will significantly help my students EXPLORE forms of energy, and OBSERVE how energy is transferred hands-on!
Science is learned best when concepts can be manipulated and connections can be made.
