My Students

My students come from varied backgrounds. Our school is made up of primarily Asians and Latinos with a growing group of Caucasian and Indian. Over half of the student population qualifies for reduced or free lunch. They are full of life and the thirst to want to go beyond their comfort zone. I love providing new experiences for them. They get excited over the little things. I love watching their excitement in their eyes as they watch a butterfly finally emerge from their cocoon. Or watching them cheer every tenth day because we can change the ten straws into a ten in our place value chart.

My Project

Science Camp is a great hands-on learning opportunity for the 5th graders. It also signifies a step towards independence since for many they may have never been away from their family and yet they are about to leave elementary school to the bigger world of junior high.

At Science Camp, students will have the opportunity to learn about the environment they live in, they will learn to observe, analyze and inquire, they will gain a respect for our world.

For many of our students, this may be the first time they have ever been in a forest and truly experience what nature has to offer.

In our school community, cost is always a huge factor on whether a child is able to experience learning beyond the classroom. Being able to help bring down the cost that all the families have to pay for their child to attend the camp will encourage more families to allow their child to attend this 4-day trip. Every child should be given this opportunity to experience Science Camp.
