Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! I have never seen a class with so much sparkle and drive as them despite the hardships that a majority of them face.
My school is a Title I school in Northern California where around 85% of students receive free breakfast and lunch daily.
In addition to that, the school works to help them with clothing from local organizations, food from a food pantry, and fundraising for 5th-grade science camp. My students know their hard work will pay off!
My Project
When you ask any former Fifth grader at our school what their favorite field trip was, 99% of them have the same answer... SCIENCE CAMP. Santa Cruz County Outdoor Science School is one of the best Science Camps out there and we are excited to return! They have allowed students a space to be themselves, useful tools for hands on learning, and an opportunity to see the relationship between living things and nature.
This field trip provides an opportunity for students to experience the great outdoors in ways that they are not accustomed to, to unplug for a week, to participate in a classroom in the forest, and to bond with their teachers and peers in a way that they couldn't in a traditional classroom setting.
This will be our third year attending Science Camp at this location because of the amazing adventures they allow students to have. Students will have an opportunity to spend three days and fours nights immersed in the Santa Cruz mountains while learning about ecosystems, ecological concerns, and the relationships that people have on their environment. We have decided to attend Science Camp in the fall of 2019 so that we can carry on that bond that brings teachers and students together throughout the year.
While this field trip does cost around $350 per student it does include their lodging, food, activity costs, upkeep of the location, and transportation of the students and their belongings. We are looking into a variety of ways to fund raise for this event, and are hoping to raise part of the cost here. With your help we can share in this wonderful experience with all of our students!
