My Students

I teach 2nd grade in an elementary school nestled in the mountains of far Southwest Virginia. We are a very small school, and we serve an area that has a high number of students living in poverty. Many of their parents are not employed.

I want to provide them with some materials to use on the playground to explore the world around them.

Many students do not play outside at home due to increased technology in homes, and unsafe neighborhoods. I want to give them an opportunity to learn about the world they live in through exploration.

My Project

Many children today do not venture outside much due to technology being such a draw for them in their leisure time. Many also live in unsafe neighborhoods. Our school playground offers a safe place to explore the world around them.

I want to give my students tools to use to explore nature on the playground during recess.

By providing them with bug catchers, magnifying glasses, nets, and other tools, we are opening up a world of exploration for them. This will help students become more curious about their surroundings, and give them a way to learn while playing outside on the playground.
