Their eyes lit up as they saw their names written in shiny vinyl across the front of their kits, and each child held their new supplies as if they were treasures. Inside were bright markers, sketchbooks, colored pencils, and more; everything they needed to keep their imaginations soaring. As I delivered each art kit I reminded each of my students how amazing they were, I encouraged them to continue to be creative, and I wished them the best of luck in the upcoming school year. Not only were the students surprised and thrilled with their gift but I could tell the parents were touched as well with the gesture.\r\n\r\nMany of my students don't have access to basic art supplies at home, so receiving their very own kit was incredibly special. One student hugged her kit, with her eyes sparkling, and the brightest smile on her face, and declared, \"I can make art whenever I want now!\" Another student told me exactly what they were going to do with some of the supplies, and a few students said they planned to bring their new pencil box with their name on it to 3rd grade with them. \r\n\r\nThat simple joy captured everything I hoped this project would bring — a sense of pride, ownership, and the reminder that they are seen and valued. That's a difficult reality to process, and I constantly found myself wishing there was more I could do to help these amazing kids.\r\n\r\nI began purchasing snacks for a few of my students, slipping them into their backpacks so they'd have something to take home during the week. It added up quickly, but I knew the sacrifice was worth it.\r\n\r\nEven so, a few snacks weren't enough to meet the needs of all the students who, day after day, would tell me how hungry they were by the end of the afternoon. I hated having to tell them I was sorry, that I wished I could provide snacks for everyone, but it was just too expensive. And that really was the truth. If it were in my budget to provide snacks each year, I would absolutely do it. But as a single mom supporting one daughter in college and another still in school, I simply can't make that happen—no matter how much I want to.\r\n\r\nThis year, I saw it again. Some of my sweet second graders couldn't focus in the afternoons, some began acting out, and others just put their heads down to sleep. I knew hunger was a big part of the problem—and I knew I had to do something.\r\n\r\nThat's when Donors Choose came to mind. I had always wanted to try creating a project on their site, and this felt like the perfect reason. What did my students need the most? Food.\r\n\r\nAfter submitting my project, I started to worry—would anyone even fund it? Asking for help doesn't come easily to me. I usually try to take care of things on my own, but in this case, I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone and share it.\r\n\r\nI posted my project on one of my social media accounts several times, but unfortunately, I didn't receive any donations. So I took the next step and decided I needed to share it with friends and family, asking them to spread the word. Around that time, I mentioned my project to a co-worker who had recently started helping in my classroom. She asked if she could share it, and I said, \"Sure!\" I figured, the more it's out there, the better.\r\n\r\nThat night, the donations started rolling in. One after another—and by the end of the evening, the entire project was funded. I remember just sitting down and crying tears of joy for the generosity of strangers who opened their hearts and gave so selflessly to make a huge impact on the lives of 15 children.\r\n\r\n\"Impact\" is honestly an understatement. Since receiving the snacks, I've seen a huge difference in my students' learning, their ability to stay focused until the end of the day, and their overall joyfulness. Yes—all because of what you made possible.\r\n\r\nSnack time has become one of their favorite parts of the day (besides recess, of course—nothing beats recess!). One day, we ran out of time and had to skip snack time. At the end of the day, one of my students was crying. When I asked why, she said, \"Because I didn't get a snack today.\" Another time, a student was getting checked out early and looked so sad. When I asked if they were okay, they said they were just sad to miss snack time. In both cases, I made sure they got something to take home. I've learned my lesson—snack time is a priority and needs to happen every day.\r\n\r\nAmazingly, it looks like we just might make it to the end of the school year with the snacks purchased through this project. That's incredible!\r\n\r\nThank you so very much for doing something I couldn't do for my students. Your generosity has been the greatest blessing of our entire school year. I honestly have tears of gratitude as I finish this letter. I wish you could meet each of the children who've benefited from your kindness. They are incredible kids with so much potential, and I care about each one of them deeply. They wrote the sweetest thank you cards to you. If you would like copies of them, just reach out to the person who shared this project with you.","fullyFundedDate":1736392050201,"projectUrl":"project/hunger-free-learning-a-small-snack-for/8987563/","projectTitle":"Hunger-Free Learning: A Small Snack for a Big Impact","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Passic","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9859715_orig.jpg?crop=2087,2087,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733298751350","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9859715"},{"teacherId":648780,"projectId":9032686,"letterContent":"Thank you so very much for donating to our classroom project, Playground Science!
