Science Behind Water Skimmers

We need four aquarium motor filters to do cleaning in our 4 bottom units to improve the filtration for our White Nile Tilapia from floating material.

Mr. Graham Blackburn Alternative School - Accelere Program
Omaha, NE Grades 9-12

About My Students

My students Maria, Malik, Koran, Shawn, Colton, and Madyson run two student laboratories doing projects for our city of Omaha and our state, Nebraska, that help build pollinator habitat plus grow food for our homeless shelter that serves 2,000 meals a day. Madyson and Colton specialize on monitoring all water quality for the Nebraska Academy of Science and Nebraska Environmental Trust Pollinator Plant Laboratory plus the Nebraska Games and Park Hatchery that produces White Nile Tilapia food fish we donate for food to the homeless shelter. Malik is in charge of pollinator plant production. Koran is in charge of maintenance of the labs. Shawn is in charge of fish feeding and health. Maria is in charge of growing the vegetables such as tomatoes, egg plants, and lettuce.

As a group the students have determined that our goal this year is to increase the efficiency of our food production. Koran and Shawn are working this project as a small business since their future career paths are in business management. Maria wants to use this as a scientific inquiry since her future career path is in criminal justice. Malik is working on assisting his local community and in state wide conservation. All are assisting in writing this grant as a way to learn this important skill. They are applying for college scholarships and job applications using this experience as part of their career resumes. Each one is in care of at least five other students to gain critical leadership skills they can use for future post secondary work. I find these as an excellent growth opportunity for my students.

In Their Own Words

Shawn and I (Maria) have a chance to use this experience as a hands on enterprise on running a mock business by keeping the records of expenses verse the amount of material we produce as a donation to our homeless shelter as income. Koran wants to develop a way to mechanically trap the material early by retrofitting these devices to each of our bottom units. Koran is using this as a way to use his mechanical talents to retrofit these into out systems. Malik wants to help grow food for his neighborhood.

Each one of us is in charge of a group of students assisting our work. For example I (Maria) keep tabs of all expenses plus log receipts for any projects. So for my resume I can say administrated the financial reporting. Shawn will be in charge of keeping all donations out plus organize the students to deliver the materials. Malik is making sure that these can be pollinated by pollinators with a group of students taking log entries at the vacant lots. Koran is getting ideas from other on how to place these units to maximize the rate of removal of floating materials.

We all come from areas that have vacant places. As a group we have seen people in want for life base needs. Our goal is to work together to assist not only our neighborhood but other areas in our city in need. Our school has hot lunch and breakfast for us. For some of us these are the only meals we have a day. We believe this can help. We even get a salad from our lab to eat what we grow.
