Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I public school dedicated to educating our students as thinkers and as individuals. Our school serves students in grades PreK-5 with rigorous academics, individualized learning opportunities, and dedicated teachers. We strive to provide learning experiences that will ensure our students are successful in high school, college, career, and beyond.

Our students have an unquenchable desire to learn and discover in new and exciting ways.

Our learners come from diverse backgrounds with diverse experiences. Many of them have moved to North Carolina from other places in the country or the world. Almost all of our students receive free/reduced breakfast and lunch. As a school, we are committed to providing students of all backgrounds, abilities, and origin a place to explore and discover their world.

My Project

My students need a selection of trade books to explore the world around them. The books I am requesting include award-winning texts on geography, biology, history, and women's studies. They will teach my students about different aspects of the world that many do not have exposure to.

Most of my students' families do not have means to travel outside their neighborhood.

My fifth graders are naturally curious about other cultures, people, and their surroundings. These beautifully illustrated and photographed books will help broaden their exposure to how others live in the United States and around the world.

I plan to use some of these texts, such as "Tiny Creatures: The World of Microbes," in science and social studies lessons to provide context and background knowledge. Other books, such as "City Atlas: Travel the World with 30 City Maps," will be displayed in our classroom library's spotlight section for students to peruse at their leisure.

I know that adding this selection of books to our classroom library will deeply enhance both their learning and interest in a multitude of science and social studies topics. Students love trade texts and love making connections between their lives and books.
