My 7th grade students are on an amazing journey, exploring the intersection where science and technology meet language and literature. They are scientists, reporters, investigators, and commanders of their own ships, documenting their voyages in a unit we call “Science and Science Fiction—From Robots and Rockets to Aliens and UFOs,” a cross-content Science/ELA/ESL reading and writing project. My students are beginning to low-intermediate ELLs, English Language Learners, from all over the world—Pakistan, Haiti, Nepal, just to name a few countries.
Maybe you can imagine how the language in 7th grade physical science textbooks is too advanced for my students and how elementary-level science books do not cover the concepts from physics and chemistry that they not only need, but also in which they are interested. Many of my students are what some may call “reluctant readers,” they will be the first to tell you that they don't like reading, but put a non-fiction article about “robo-roaches” or a sci-fi chapter book about alien abductions in their hands and they won't want to put it down! We just finished Janet Lorimer's Flashback and my students are glowing. For many of them, this is the first chapter book they've finished! While reading this science fiction book, students were waving their hands in the air, excited to make real-world connections to the physical science concepts we are studying.
Please help nurture my students' newfound love of reading and interest in science and technology links by providing us with more science fiction materials appropriate for their English language proficiency level. We are asking for a Teacher Resource Guide and class sets (25 books) of three titles, Bugged!, Murray's Nightmare, and Escape from Earth, in the Saddleback Publishing Pageturners Science Fiction series. Thank you for your time, your passion for education, and your love of children!
