We are an International Baccalaureate school that focuses on engaging students in project-work. However, our students come from high poverty areas and are often unable to be exposed to experiences available in more affluent areas. We have a high population of students with special education goals and a significant number of students needing additional language support to learn English.
Many students are missing key opportunities to engage in meaningful literary interactions.
Many of our students have a difficult life at home. Increasingly, they turn to their screens or the streets for engagement. The loss of interactions with people face-to-face creates a hardship in schools that often feels insurmountable. As an educator, I seek not only to educate the minds of my students but to help foster their connections to people.
The days of teaching a single subject are over. While I am currently considered a reading teacher, my focus is shifting to science in the upcoming year. I seek to build a library of engaging texts to bridge the divide between science and reading.
My Project
I am requesting a collection of literature connected to science. I am a reading teacher by trade, but I am moving into a science position.
With a small collection of science related novels, I hope to strengthen the ties between reading for pleasure and scientific study.
My students need reading materials that are engaging. This includes needing books that are updated and easily accessible. By having a library within the classroom that supports both a love of reading and a love of science, more students will engage in both content areas (language arts and science). I will use the materials for read-aloud novels and to allow students easy-access to books they might not otherwise experience.
