Science and Labs and Microscopes - Oh My

My students need to be able to show me what they are looking at under their microscopes so I can guide them while they are viewing their specimens.

My Students

Who doesn't love to look at cool specimens under the microscope? Problem is, most students are actually looking at dirt and streaks instead of red blood cells or fungal spores and they don't know it. These microscopes have a screen attached so I can see what the students see

My school is a Title 1 school with over 60% of the population on free/reduced lunch.

Experiences with new technology is an uncommon experience for them and they get so excited when they get the chance to use these high-tech devices; it makes them feel like they are on an episode of CSI. They appreciate and care for these high cost items. Many of these students have aspirations of science in college and use of technology helps them feel like they are being prepared for that next step outside of our small town.

My Project

Every year my sophomore biology students get the chance to explore microscopes. We start with learning the history and advances in the timeline of microscopes, then perform lessons on how small the items are under the scope with measurement activities, how to focus, calculate magnification, observe depth and field of view and finally they get to view several different specimens on their own. We take the time to draw, label and determine the size of these specimens to appreciate the role microscopes played in our understanding of science today. Unfortunately, it has been hard to teach students all these lessons without being able to view what they are seeing; a problem that will be solved by accumulating a collection of these microscopes. I also teach my school's first AP Biology course and these students will view bacteria at 1000X - a task that definitely requires my on hand assistance and viewing.

I try to stay focused on the things that people love about science, hands-on explorations.

Microscope work is sometimes disappointing for students when they realize they can't find what they are trying to under the scope and I hate not being able to help them figure it out because it has been impossible for me to observe where they are going wrong. With these scopes no student will leave the microscope unit with drawings of smudge and dirt again!
