I teach at an amazing school with really awesome students who overcome obstacles every day! One challenge many of my students face is that they come from socially/economically disadvantaged homes. We serve a large English language learner population. Many of my kids are labeled as "at risk." However, when I walk my school's halls I don't see "at risk." I see so much potential around me! Many of our kids have the potential to be a first-generation college graduate. Our learners come from diverse backgrounds, but their desire to succeed is universal.
As we know, reading is the key to academic success!
It is my hope to instill a deep love of reading in my students. I hope to do this by creating a stronger literacy culture.
For the past three years, our school has hosted a campus-wide book club to get everyone excited about reading. We ask the entire student body and staff to read the same book title. We also include other school/community members such as custodians, cafeteria employees, and bus drivers.
The purpose of this project is to support a strong literacy culture on our campus.
We hope that by getting everyone to talk about the same book, we can get a conversation going about books and reading. It is my hope that by being a part of this conversation, our students will grow a strong love of reading.
