Our elementary school has over 500 students, many of whom come from households of drug abuse, incarceration, family conflict, absent parents, or childhood trauma. These negative early life experiences make it difficult for a large number of our students to manage their behaviors and emotions appropriately in a school setting. Despite the challenges our students have faced, we are committed to providing them with the tools and skills needed to be successful academically and socially.
Our students deserve the opportunity to learn coping skills that will help them achieve their goals now, and for the rest of their lives.
While our students have supports outside of their everyday classroom, they deserve the chance to stay in class, learn academically, build friendships with peers, and learn to manage their behaviors and emotions.
My Project
Having these items and books will allow my students to have a more complete therapy library. The diverse subjects in these books will provide resources for ALL of my students, regardless of the struggles they are facing. These items will also help create a warm and inviting space for my students to share their thoughts and feelings.
These books and library items will assist my students in processing their feelings and emotions related to the socioemotional barriers they face in their every day lives.
From parental incarceration to foster care to mental health diagnosis, these items will improve the mental heath of all of my students.
