This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I've often observed people cringe up their face or respond in a way that lets me know they think my job is more difficult than that of other teachers because of where I teach, or that my job is less enjoyable. Actually, I have the privilege of teaching the best group of students out there. They are extra special because despite all the odds they are faced with, they remain resilient. They come in joyful, optimistic, and ready to learn and do their best! We belong to a school in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
My students are eager, respectful, very talkative, humorous, and at times have a little more energy than I would like, but all in all, I wouldn't trade them for any other group of students.
Ninety five percent of the students qualify for free lunch. In addition, the neighborhood has been deemed one of the worst areas in Brooklyn, and the city at large. It possesses all of the qualities that come with poverty: high crime rate, gang violence, failing schools, limited services, etc. Despite all the odds I remain committed! I am committed to my students and the community in which I serve.
My Project
The dilemma is that we have depleted many of our basic school supplies, which ensures that learning takes place in a smooth and comfortable way. As most teachers would know, copy paper is a hot commodity. It will be used for the teachers to print information for student research, homework activities, print exams, create the publishing paper for students to publish their writings, etc.
Some of our biggest uses for the chart paper and markers are for teachers to model writing and reading strategies, display notes within the various subject areas, and for students to engage in group work.
All supplies requested are to enhance the students' learning and allow the teachers to effectively deliver instruction.
