My Students

My students come to me so excited to be in a class that teaches them to cook. This class is Food and Nutrition. They get to plan, prepare, cook, and eat the meals they prepare in class. They are eager to learn and start learning these skills in class to help them live healthier lives. They also like to go home and help prepare meals for their families now.

My students come from very different areas around our city, some are from the inner city while others come from low-lying areas in the parish.

I have students mixed in classes together from 10th to 12th grade. They are beginning to choose their career paths, preparing for college, thinking about living on their own, and some are learning that high school is really almost over.

Learning how to plan, prepare, and cook different dishes will help them in their future to live healthier lives. These students are really preparing for life outside of school and living independently by being in this Food and Nutrition class.

My Project

Students need basic supplies to be successful in class. Students are making posters and illustrations on kitchen safety to display in the classroom. The students do not have the supplies needed for these types of projects.

Students are coming to school without basic supplies such as paper and pencils, with many teachers requiring them to have these items on hand.

Students can feel defeated or like a failure when they come to school without basic needs.

To be able to provide them with some of these items for my class as well as other classes, we can set these students to be successful in school.
