I teach the AVID Elective class and our mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing our students for college-readiness in a global society. My students are typically the first to attend college in their family. They aren't always the top performing students in the school, but tend to be the hardest working and therefore are honor roll students. At Apopka High School we have the perfect blend of students: nearly 33% African American, 33% white, 33% Hispanic. Our total focus is directing these students towards college by taking college field trips, bringing in guest speakers, and focusing on the skills necessary to be successful.
My Project
Many of our students are incredibly hard working, but come from families with limited income. Typically, parents are able to buy a few supplies at the beginning of the year, but struggle to maintain appropriate materials throughout the school year.
In our class, we focus on maintaining concise organization.
Students are monitored monthly to ensure they are keeping papers in folders labeled by class. The more organized a student is, the greater chance they have at being successful. We are asking for basic supplies such as paper, folders, spirals, binders, dividers, pens, and pencils to keep students in order and ready for class.
We have also requested dry erase markers for our Collaborative Study Groups and Tutorial Sessions, where students work together on white boards to solve problems they are facing in core academic classes.
