Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Vision PS 73X Community School Newspaper PS 73X is located in the Morris Heights Section of the South Bronx in the New York City. We belong to Community School District 9. District 9 is located within Congressional District 16, which of the 435 Congressional districts, has been cited as the poorest in the nation. This is based on median family income. PS 73X represents this social-economic population. We are a Title I school where about ninety percent (90%) of our students are eligible for free lunch. This Pre-K through fifth grade school serves a population of approximately 842 students from culturally diverse backgrounds. The community is home to many new immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Central America, Jamaica and West Africa. The school building is housed in a five story building with an additional annex. PS 53X is a central part of the community and provides continuous as well as excellent education and guidance for all of our students. According to the latest available ethnic data 60.7% of our students are Hispanic, 37.7% of students are Black, 0.5% are White, and 1.0% Asian. Approximately 7% of the students have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and receive the full continuum of services including Special Education Teacher Support Services through the School-Based Support Team, integrated inclusion classes, related services such as speech and language, and counseling. In addition to the programs that are provided, the number of English Language Learners (ELLs) enrolled in our school this year represents 30% of PS 73X student population. With Spanish as the dominant language, I serve thirty English Language Learners with very limited language proficiency. My goal is to motivate my students to become better readers and writers through the infusion of technology in my reading and writing lessons. Why a School Newspaper Project? My position as a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) has great challenges. The traditional definition of literacy is the ability to read and write. With the rapid development of new technologies, the nature of literacy is undergoing a rapid metamorphosis. Thus, in addition to reading and writing, the current definition of literacy also includes the ability to learn, comprehend, and interact with technology in a meaningful way (Coiro, 2003). My School's Newspaper Project will just allow me to meet the challenges of the 21st Century, helping my students to improve their reading and writing skills as well as their technology abilities. They will become reporters in different disciplines, photographers, designers, editors, etc. My goals for my English Language Learners are: Children will improve their reading and writing skills Improve their language acquisition Become technologically literate by the end of the year long project. Increase the technological capacity of our school by building upon the technological infrastructure that is in place in the classroom. My project will benefit a great deal by having a printer and a digital camera. The school has a digital camera, but being able to have our own will allow my students to have independence and control of the camera use as needed. Both the digital camera and printer will be essential tools for the children to use in their newspaper section reports. The Newspaper Project will impact approximately 70 students in 6 classrooms. The selected classrooms will serve as the model to demonstrate how instruction can be transformed by instructional technology tools that will engage students in new and exciting ways of teaching and learning. It will ultimately improve student academic achievement and acquisition of second language Your support will be greatly appreciated by PS 73's students and the school community at large.
