Our new student news website is a modern school newspaper ... and these young journalists get to see their articles online so they can be read at home or school.
But without digital cameras, the students are very limited in sharing photos with their stories.
We're a public middle school in a south Seattle suburb.
These kids are a slice of America, with wide diversity and interests. Our rich diversity makes it even more important that we give these kids the tools they need to tell their stories.
They let their curiosity and interests run wild with their reporting and writing as they keep our learning community up-to-date with the news, feature stories, and information happening around school and beyond.
In an age when Facebook and texting seem to dominate much of their "input and output," these 7th graders are aware of the importance of telling stories accurately, responsibly, and interestingly -- and more pictures will help them do that more and more effectively.
My Project
The pride these kids take in their published writing is inspiring, but those who don't have their own cameras are forced to try to borrow them every time they want to "illustrate" an article (which should be every time).
By enabling my students to always have a staff Nikon CoolPics digital camera at their disposal (complete with interchangeable memory cards and a tripod), you'll be increasing their storytelling powers.
These cameras even have the capability of producing short videos ... which our website is capable of carrying. That's why we're asking for the additional memory cards.
Pictures increase the impact of the students' articles, and give the kids more ways to communicate effectively in a responsible, exciting way.
Who knows, you could be seeing one of them replacing Anderson Cooper or Brian Williams someday.
Now it's just a matter of getting the cameras into their hands!
