School Herbarium: Spring Wildflowers

Help me give my students picture frames to display our pressed spring wildflower specimens. The frames will solidify the importance of plant identification, provide a beautiful resource for future students, and elevate the meaning of their work.

My Project

Student work is important and deserves the respect of professional display.

My botany students have been learning to identify spring wildflowers based on anatomical features of flowers.

In doing so they are undertaking advanced work in the plant sciences, gaining insight into the taxonomical approaches used by botanists. Funds raised from this project will be used to purchase large frames for the display of preserved plant specimens.

An herbarium is a collection of dried plant specimens which aides in research. Many universities, especially those with a focus in agriculture, house an herbarium. In our case, we want to make an herbarium which is publicly displayed, as opposed to having specimens tucked into file cabinets. In displaying student-collected, preserved, and identified specimens, we will elevate the level of authenticity of their work and provide them with a public forum for it.

In our building, displays of artwork and other students projects must conform to a level of professionalism. As such, our specimens must be framed. The goal is for this collection to grow over time and become a permanent fixture of the science wing of our building.
