My Project

My name is Chris Parrillo and I am a special education teacher at Amity High School in Woodbridge, CT leading a program that serves students with social, emotional and behavioral disorders. With involvement from special education students, staff, and community members, we are revitalizing Amity's school garden space. In an effort to build and develop this program, we are respectfully requesting funds to help finance necessary garden supplies.

The implementation of a school garden will have numerous benefits for our students academically, physically, and socially/emotionally.

Given that our program is designed to foster a therapeutic environment, a school garden is an ideal resource in that it offers a calm, peaceful environment where students can experience physical activity, a connection to nature, and a true sense of accomplishment.

Maintaining a garden requires daily maintenance, which is going to help reinforce discipline, routine, and adherence to schedule; it's an enormous benefit to our students who struggle with school attendance and executive functioning.

Academically, the inclusion of the garden into our integrated science curriculum would be a huge benefit to our students who are not traditional classroom learners. This would offer a hands-on experience for tactile/kinesthetic minds who learn in non-traditional ways. We would also like to integrate the use of vermicomposting into our classroom. This process uses live worms as a means of turning compostable scraps into fertilizer for our plants. It's another unique learning opportunity for all students, but particularly those who...quite simply...love bugs!
