Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school has a large percentage of students at the poverty level. Many come to school from crowded apartments where multiple families live together. The parents of our students often have limited education and their employment opportunities reflect that. Physical space for growing vegetables and funds to create consistent healthy meals is frequently not available to the families of our students. The issues of poor eating practice and living on the poverty level reflects on the unhealthy body weight of much of our student population.
My Project
We have a program called Garden Club where third, fourth, and fifth grade students work in the school garden and sell their crops. Many materials like trays and collecting bins are needed for harvesting and displaying their wares. Phillips Garden Club provides students with agricultural and nutritional education as well as team collaboration and leadership skills. They plant, maintain, and harvest seasonal crops in the school garden. They advertise and market these crops to sell at a school farmers' market. I am requesting totes to collect the vegetables from the garden. Also, trays and storage tubs to display crops on farmers' market tables.
