We are one big, happy family. Our Title I school is home to a large population (92%) of English language learners. My students face many challenges while living in a new country and attempting to learn a new language.
My three classes are filled with 75 eager students who love working together to complete various tasks.
My goal is to make their transition as smooth as possible in hopes of preparing them for great achievement. They are capable of greatness and will achieve.
We have created a community garden for our school and community. Students and their families will have the opportunity to have access to fresh vegetables all year long. Students have also been maintaining the garden and are in need of mulch, cow manure, soil, and wood to build more wooden boxes for their vegetables, plants, and flowers. During this activity, our students will learn the importance of saving and protecting Mother Earth through planting and harvesting crops and flowers without the use of processing plants and chemicals. Students will also learn to care for their crops by pulling weeds, watering, and assisting with cutting/edging the grass as well using a weed trimmer. Students, staff, and local members of our community will plant flowers bulbs and vegetable seeds in starter pots and planters to allow the plants plenty of room to grow. By exposing our students to world issues in environmental science through hands-on learning, we will hopefully encourage them to complete further research to assist with solutions for a healthier future.
Learning Agricultural Science will change my students' lives forever.
Learning how to plant and harvest crops, flowers, and care for chickens and quails will empower my students by allowing them to become "farmers" by growing their own healthy vegetables and herbs. These lessons and skills will last them a lifetime. Community gardens are a hands-on learning experience for youth and this leads to better academic performance and social skills.
