I teach 26 first grade students at a public school in St. Bernard Parish. Teaching first grade is an extraordinary age because they are eager for every new adventure. I enjoy finding ways to get through to all of my students especially my exceptional ones (ADD/ADHD and Developmental Delays). My kids are incredibly driven and come from diverse backgrounds; we have many English Language Learners. First graders are like sponges because they take in information on a daily basis. I believe that the best way to help children learn is by making things accessible to them.
I teach at a Title I school in Louisiana where 100% of the students in our PreK-5 school receive free breakfasts and lunches.
In addition, our school participates in a local community program which allows students to be signed up for weekend non-perishable meals; many students we teach have reported they do not eat full meals when they are not in school.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things interesting and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
Help me provide more nonfiction reading resources to the young readers at my school. The Scholastic reading set I chose will help build a foundation and vocabulary in science that our students will build upon throughout the years. Scholastic Science Readers about Life Cycles will expand our science resources for my students to explore and a pocket chart to display vocabulary.
These students vary in background and family dynamics, therefore we need to help close as many gaps in knowledge as early as we can.
One way is to expose students to vocabulary and foundational knowledge they can build upon throughout the years.
