Scholastic Picture Books on DVD

My students need a DVD collection to help them understand literary elements and the joy of reading.

I teach 5th grade in a K-8 school, and nearly every year my students come to me not knowing basic literary elements.

While many of my students can read on or close to level, many can't tell me the plot of a book or the proper sequence of events from a narrative. Another teacher found a DVD from the Scholastic Video Collection at a garage sale. It included the story 'Blueberries for Sal', which I was using to teach how to compare characters. Thinking it would be a nice little break from hearing me read the story again, I played the story off the DVD. My students LOVED it. They enjoyed the simple animations, they enjoyed the music, they enjoyed the inflection in the narrator's voice. All students in the classroom paid attention, which was pretty much the opposite from when I was reading it out loud.

This proposal would purchase nearly all the DVDs in the Scholastic Video Collection. It includes nearly 200 individual stories. Not only would I be able to continue using these to teach the whole class how to use literary elements to deepen their connection to a story, but with that many stories I can create a 'video center' during my reading block for students to practice identifying and applying those literary elements.

Your help will ensure that my students get exposed to many classic storybooks (which they still enjoy, even in 5th grade) while they deepen their understanding of literary elements as they 'watch' the book (which I enjoy).
