My Students

What does it take to inspire fourth graders to read and interpret nonfiction? Answer: Exciting, colorful, real-world social studies and science related current events. Also, math activity books to make practice fun.

My small school is a true gem in Southern California.

It is a Title One school, which means there is a large percentage of children from low-income families. It is a wonderfully diverse school. My classroom, for example, is comprised of students from the following backgrounds: African American, white, Hispanic, Filipino, Chilean, Iranian, among others. They are enthusiastic learners and love coming to school. They do, however, need assistance obtaining some basic materials for school.

My Project

Students will receive a subscription to Scholastic News Magazine. That means twenty-four weekly issues delivered for every student throughout the year. Students will look forward to getting their very own new issue every Friday. They will read independently and answer comprehension questions on the back. We will then read aloud and discuss the important, and often fascinating, issues that are presented. Monthly, students will be asked to choose a favorite article and write a current event summary and opinion essay. Additionally, students will each receive a grade level math activity book to help strengthen math skills presented as fun games and puzzles. This is a great resource to use when students finish work early or during independent work time. The Staples electric pencil sharpener will keep our pencils ready for writing.

Giving every student a subscription to Scholastic News Magazine makes a real difference in students' ability to read and comprehend nonfiction.

It motivates kids to read and provides them with a basic knowledge of current events facing the world today, at a reading level appropriate to the grade. Additionally, math activity books with games and puzzles will help strengthen grade level math skills and keep learning fun.
