My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students enjoy reading, but they often do not have high-interest materials in their homes. I have been researching ways to address this issue, and I have come up with the perfect solution! I am requesting weekly subscriptions to Scholastic News for each one of my students!

Scholastic News is a magazine that features nonfiction and current events for students at various grade levels.

Each issue contains articles that interest students while engaging them in activities that support their language development, as well as social studies and science content knowledge. With these resources, I will be able to use articles that connect to the digital edition, videos, and other resources to help teach important, standards-aligned lessons. I want to provide my students with every opportunity to learn, and these magazines will help to do that!
