My students need the Scholastic News and Time for Kids magazines, plus the Our Global Community Book Set, Comparing Bugs books, and Backyard books to read during independent work time.
"The ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving of being alive." Autobiography by Malcome X. 1964. Through reading a variety of texts, my students will gain more knowledge, discover the joy and love of learning which empowers them to be the future leaders of America.
This year, my class is a combination of grade 1 and 2.
There are 8 first graders and 12 second graders. We are also made-up of a mixture of ethnicity and economic background as well as learning abilities and styles. There are students who are already able to read chapter books and there are some that are still learning to blend words and putting them together. Reading comprehension will be much easier for the students if they have more chances to practice reading whether with an adult or teacher. That's why we really need reading materials to practice with.
My Project
My students need the Scholastic and Times for Kids magazines and Global Community, Comparing Bugs, and Backyard book sets to read during independent work time. The Scholastic magazines and Time for Kids will be used in the classroom and at home to practice for reading, researching, and writing. First, the students will read the magazines and relate to the themes that they are learning in their reading curriculum. Second, they will use the magazines to discuss the themes with their partners in class. Then, they will bring the magazines home to do a research project on a related topic. Finally, they will be scrutinizing at the mechanics and grammar of the text to help them understand how writings are being done. The books will be used as resources in class for the students to read during independent work time.
These books and magazines are crucial to the students' learning.
In addition to motivate the students to become life-long readers and writers, they also provide the chance for the students to read and openly discuss about the real interesting world topics. "The greatest gift is a passion for reading." Elizabeth Hardwick. So please give the gift of love. Help to empower the students by donating magazines for our class. Thank you!
