My Students

Have you ever been in need of a fresh start? My students struggled academically and behaviorally with another teacher for the beginning of the year. Their teacher quit and left them with no supplies. We are trying to start afresh together and basic supplies would help us enormously.

My students are 7th-9th graders at an all-boys school in Pennsylvania.

They face incredible obstacles in their daily lives - a crumbling neighborhood, a violent school environment, and a society that negatively judges them from the day they are born. Their potential is extraordinary, but they often need a supportive nudge in the right direction.

My Project

Currently, our classroom looks much the way it did in the 1960s. The chalkboard is old and continually dusty and dirty (despite my constant cleaning). If my students had the ability to use a whiteboard for class activities, they would be much more likely to participate. I envision interactive games being played on the board, students teaching each other through use of the board, and a cleaner, more modern atmosphere in which to work. Having a printer in the room would allow me to regularly update the students' progress reports. It would also allow students to use the printer/copier as a resource on their "Math in the Real World" projects that they will start next week.

Change is possible through the smallest measures.

I am constantly amazed by my students' ability to rise to the occasion when given the slightest encouragement. Simply having adequate supplies in the classroom would give them a sense of pride and purpose.
