Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are first time school learners who are extremely active, motivated, excited, and may I say adorable. A majority of my students come to my class in July knowing little or no English. A majority of my students are Latino with 3 students who were born in Bangladesh. All of my students come from families whose income falls within the poverty level. Many of my children live with multiple families in small apartments where space is at a premium.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to have taught in my school since its inception.
The school offers free breakfast and lunch to all of our pre K to 5th grade students and often these are the only meals they eat in a day. The students in my class are eager to learn through motivating higher level activities. Unfortunately, I have only an hour of teacher assistant time twice a week for my active and needy four year olds and keeping everyone on task and learning can often be a challenge.
The more stimulating, hands-on manipulatives and centers I can rotate in my classroom, the more time I can devote to each student's individual needs.
My Project
My students are 4 years old. For many of them, it is the first time that they have ever been in school. Giving these young students an opportunity to earn Scratch and Sniff stickers helps to motivate them to learn and follow the classroom rules.
It is of utmost importance to teach the children the most basic rules of my classroom so that all children can learn and play safely.
Children are highly motivated to follow the rules knowing that they will earn a colorful, scented sticker at the end of the day.
The scented stickers are fun for the children to smell and then to place on their homework folders. They love to trade and compare stickers at the end of the day. I also put the stickers on completed homework which encourages the children to bring their homework daily. If a child is caught being good at a given moment I can easily reward their behavior with a sticker right on the spot! Scented stickers are a tangible way to reward a child’s positive behavior. The kids are delighted when they receive a sticker and love the variety of scents and prints!
