Scaring Up Literacy: Spooky Books for Reluctant Readers

Help me give my students a set of exciting, high-interest, low-readability horror books that look cool and build literacy confidence.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is designed to stock our literacy learning centers with books that respect my students' maturity while meeting them exactly where they are academically. The specific titles in this cart, such as the Library of Doom and Zone Books series, are "High-Interest, Low-Readability" (Hi-Lo) treasures.

Why these books are a game-changer for my RSP students:

Removing the Stigma: These books have "cool," spooky, and mature covers. A student can carry The Golden Book of Death or The Eye in the Graveyard around school without feeling self-conscious. To an outsider, it looks like a graphic novel or a scary chapter book, but the text inside is designed for accessible decoding and comprehension.

The Hook: My lowest readers often struggle with focus. The horror and mystery genres provide the adrenaline punch needed to sustain their attention. Short chapters and cliffhangers give them the immediate satisfaction of finishing a story, which builds massive confidence.

Learning Center Independence: These books will be the anchor of our independent reading rotation. Because the text is accessible, students can engage with the content without constant adult intervention, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their work.

By funding this project, you aren't just buying scary stories; you are helping students overcome the fear of reading. You are giving them books that make them feel proud, grown-up, and successful.
