Scanning Our Way Through Bilingual Algebra!

My students need a document scanner.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach bilingual algebra at one of the largest public high schools in New York. My school is a high needs high school - over 90% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world and my amazing students have worked hard against all odds to make it to high school. They continue to work hard and hope to one day attend college In order for them to graduate high school and attend college, it is essential for them to improve both their algebra and English language skills. In my classroom, we try to do both. However, working in one of the last large schools (over 4500 students) in NY, I've always dealt with a shortage of supplies. This problem became even more acute a few months back when the school budget was cut. At least once a week I have a student email me and ask for a copy of a handout or notes from class. Sometimes they lose their copy, sometimes they are sick and can’t make it to school, and sometimes they just did’t get a chance to copy down that last example from the board. Sadly, I always have to respond that I do not have a digital copy of the work and they will need to wait until I get a chance to make a paper copy. If I had a scanner, I could instantly scan any document and send a digital document to my students. Not only will this allow me to get material to my students instantly, I will also save a lot of paper and copy toner. I want to be able to reach my students and keep them engaged. I want them to get their questions answered instantly, so that they don’t get frustrated and give up. I want my students that are sick at home to not fall behind. Finally, I want my students to construct the background knowledge and skills he or she needs to graduate high school and succeed in college. Your donation of a scanner will help my students and me achieve our goals. Thank you very much for considering this proposal.
