My Students

Being able to write effectively is an essential skill for the 21st century student. Unfortunately, writing is a task that many students hate because it appears to be such a daunting task for them.

My school is unique because we have a large number of high-performing gifted students.

On the other hand, our school is located near housing projects, so we are a high poverty school. Our school has a rich history as we are one of the oldest schools in the country. I teach a diverse group of freshmen students. I teach about thirty gifted students, and the remainder of my students (around forty) are on grade level or a little below grade level. Some of my students have traveled extensively because they are from affluent families, but most of my students have never left the sate of Georgia. My students and/or their parents have set high goals for themselves, and they aspire to attend a four year college and pursue professional careers such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, or business-related careers. My students work hard, and most of them get so excited about learning new things.

My Project

To foster greater writing skills, I plan to use technology-related writing assignments. I want to actively engage my students by teaching them how to create blogs, tell stories digitally, and create documents to upload to our classroom wiki. Students will use the USB drives to save their documents before uploading them. Also, the netbooks will provide my students with a means to upload their documents to the web. For our school of 1700 students, we have to share three computer labs. It is difficult to attain computer access for all of our students during class because of the limited number of computers. With this project of Digital Storytelling, students need a way to story their writing and upload it to the web. Both of the resources that I have requested would be such a benefit to my classroom and to my students.

This project will allow my students to have greater access to computers and will allow them to be able to save their work before uploading to the web.

Most of my students do not have USB drives, or they cannot afford to buy them. I have found that sometimes my students are unable to complete their writing assignments in one class period. Donations to this request will allow my students more opportunities for Internet access and the ability to store their work.
