Say Konichiwa to our Asian Art Unit!

My students need origami paper, watercolors, clay, construction paper, paint brushes, markers, dowel rods and yarn to create their asian inspired art projects.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Lapka's classroom raised $686

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students come to an underfunded inner-city school and have few supplies to use in our art classroom. Our student population deals with poverty on a daily basis. It's important that my students have exceptional and positive experiences in school. Our school relies heavily on donations and volunteers to make those kinds of experiences a reality!

My students are curious and excited about making art.

This year my students will learn about different cultures, artists and historical periods of art. As the one universal language that we all speak, I love bringing art to these very deserving kiddos!

My Project

In order to create a more peaceful and open minded generation of young people students more than ever need to be connected to our global world. Through art I have the opportunity to bring new and exciting cultural experiences to students everyday.

Through art making, students are able to expose their minds and imaginations to places far away.

By allowing students to have a positive experience with cultures very different from their own I hope that they learn to approach the world around them with wonder and curiosity and an open mind.

During this unit Kindergarteners will make Kimono dolls and try on a real Kimono from Japan. The origami paper will be used for the dolls kimonos.

First graders will learn about the Japanese holiday Children's Day and create Kionobori fish kites with paint, construction paper, crepe paper and yarn.

Second graders will learn about Asian landscape paintings and the ancient art of sumi painting while creating their own kakemono or "hanging painting" of cherry blossom branches with watercolor paper, dowel rods and yarn.

Third grade students will design their own pagoda with watercolors and learn about the different ways and places people worship around the globe.

Fourth graders will be creating little good luck kitty sculptures using sculpey clay and paint.

Fifth graders study the famous painting "The Great Wave of Kanagawa" and create their own version in paint. Their wave paintings will then transform into Japanese hanging lanterns.

Finally, sixth graders will learn about myths and traditions surrounding Asian dragons and create their own parade dragon complete with festive steamers.

I'm looking forward to turning on our Asian meditation music and getting this year off to an exciting start. Thanks for believing in the power of art.
