All of my art units focus on one of three prongs: artist studies, global culture, and art history. For this upcoming unit each grade level will learn about an artist and create a work of art inspired from the master. It's important that my students, much like the artists we learn about in class, learn how to express themselves in many ways.
Learning about the power of art in our world and in ourselves helps my students to be culturally knowledgeable and improves their emotional well being. Making art is not only fun but it also matters. From Van Gogh sunflowers, Modigliani self portraits to modern Mike Altman Robots I hope to inspire in students a belief in themselves and a love of the arts.
For this unit each grade level will create a project inspired by a specific artist. Kindergartners will be studying Wassily Kandinksy while toning their cutting and pasting fine motor skills and experimenting with their sense of design. The first graders will be following in the footsteps of Jasper Johns by creating "master studies" of his famous Alphabet painting all while learning how to apply watercolors and use crayons as a wax resist. Second grade will get a flavor for Wayne Thiebaud as they create their own pastel paintings of tasty desserts. Third Grade students will experiment with oil pastels white studying the famous sunflower painting done by Van Gogh. My fourth graders will try their hand at creating pattern as they design their own version of Klimpt's Tree of Life. Fifth graders will explore the stylistic leanings of Modigliani as they create an emotional self portrait using chalk pastels. Finally my sixth grade students will study the work of a local artist, Mike Altman, and create their own modern robot paintings.
