Washington County Union Middle School students are truly unique. Nestled in the center of eastern North Carolina farmland my students come from all kinds of homes, however they all have several things in common. First is their love of music, second is their desire to learn and experience new things. I have never taught a group of children so eager to learn instruments, which is why I am creating this project.
Due to the ruralness of my school's area we lack some resources that other schools may have.
We are blessed in many ways, we have two free meals a day for every child and we received a grant that provides Chromebooks for every student to use while at school. I am grateful for these blessings however I know I could enhance their learning even more with a few more items.
This specific series of classes is General Music, a class that is provided for any student who wants to learn about music. If they cannot be in band because they cannot afford an instrument, that is okay, I have the perfect class for them. These classes are very new and therefore I have no resources for them.
It has been scientifically proven time and time again that the study of music and learning how to play an instrument improves mental and emotional abilities of children. So I decided to try and get a class set of Ukuleles for my 7th Grade general music students. My students are in a low socioeconomic area of rural Eastern North Carolina, which means money in the school systems is focused on providing reading, writing, and math materials. I will receive about $150 next year for my whole music budget.
Funding for the arts has been cut even though we all know that the arts is where children learn what it means to be human!
It is only through opportunities like DonorsChoose that I am able to bring new life experiences and cultural understanding to my kids who have never seen the beach, flown in an airplane, or visited a state outside of North Carolina. Music is a way for them to learn about the bigger world out there and Ukuleles specifically allow us to focus on Hawaiian culture.
