It has been scientifically proven time and time again that the study of music and learning how to play an instrument improves mental and emotional abilities of children. So I decided to try and get a class set of Ukuleles for my 7th Grade general music students. My students are in a low socioeconomic area of rural Eastern North Carolina, which means money in the school systems is focused on providing reading, writing, and math materials. I will receive about $150 next year for my whole music budget.
Funding for the arts has been cut even though we all know that the arts is where children learn what it means to be human! It is only through opportunities like DonorsChoose that I am able to bring new life experiences and cultural understanding to my kids who have never seen the beach, flown in an airplane, or visited a state outside of North Carolina. Music is a way for them to learn about the bigger world out there and Ukuleles specifically allow us to focus on Hawaiian culture.
