My Project

Connections are key to our learning community. We build our community and bridge individuals to make connections through the books we read and the time we spend learning together. I respect each child for who they are and I want my fourth graders to feel visible and valued in our inclusive learning community.

Our classroom looks and feels like a library in that our shelves are filled with diverse books for all types of readers as my fourth graders discover and develop their own reader identity.

My hope is for my students to see themselves as individuals yet also see the connections they share as they see themselves reflected in the books they read. Books such as Martin's Big Words and Lowriders to the Center of the Earth will be a perfect addition to our library to encourage my students to affirm and value their own unique identities as well as those of others. As readers, my fourth graders identify with the characters they meet in the books they read which is why an inclusive library is so crucial! Books can be windows for my readers to see through to the outside world as well as a reflection of their own identity as they discover their reader identity.

Aside from feeding my fourth graders need to read, I also want to be prepared to have a savory snack available when some tummies are rumbling. It's nice to have a stash of sweet and salty snacks for students who just need a little more to get them through the day. There's nothing better than a perfect pairing of savory snacks and bountiful books!
