I am a second year third grade teacher in Brooklyn. As part of our Social Studies curriculum we learn about the Brazilian Rainforest. We work on various projects such as "Cans of Knowledge." The children study a particular animal in the Rainforest and create facts cards. The cards are housed in cans they have created using "mentor cans". This material is then used to publish a research paper which is written using the "voice" of their particular animal. The class is then physically transformed into a Rainforest and all three projects are displayed in a week long museum. The children not only developed knowledge of Rainforest animals but a love for preserving the Rainforest and sharing this important knowledge with others. Three of the students were even inspired to write directly to the president about their concerns about the destruction of the Rainforest. If I had access to more "just right" reading materials and more videos the students would be able to take their learning to a higher level. Videos would enable the children to better visualize the Rainforest. These videos would enhance their writing by providing background knowledge they can draw upon. A variety of "just right" reading material would provide the students with information that they can clearly understand. Maybe next year my entire class will be inspired to save the Rainforests of the world.
